It\u2019s taken me years to be in a place where I can do this\u2014where I feel safe enough to do this; where I feel compassionate enough to do this. But napping isn\u2019t the only form of rest that can reinvigorate and restore us! More than that, it\u2019s important we find the right\u00a0<em data-node-id=\"0.1\">type\u00a0<\/em>of rest that replenishes the resources we\u2019re depleting through our specific activities and stressors<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\">Because different tasks use different resources, we need different forms of rest to recover from them. The practices and strategies we find restorative are going to be unique for each of us. We all have different stress capacities and recovery resources, and our temperaments, cultural conditioning, childhood experiences, and trauma histories will influence what we find restorative. From this, ten types of rest emerged\u2014physical, mental, sensory, emotional, social, spiritual, playful, creative, ecological, and altruistic\u2014along with a plethora of \u201crest rituals\u201d under each type for us all to explore. Here are the top rest rituals that can have an overwhelming impact toward your own relaxed woman journey. Let your choices be messy and compassionate and imperfect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\">\n<h2 class=\"body-h3 css-1q2spvl emevuu60\" data-node-id=\"4\">1. Foster safeness-inducing thought patterns.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-node-id=\"6\">\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\">Our thoughts are one of the most common sources of stress. Stress-inducing thoughts\u2014which are often related to scarcity, self-criticism, and the anticipation of something going wrong in the future\u2014trigger the body\u2019s stress response. Once we\u2019re in this state of stress, our threat sensitivity increases, and we\u2019re more likely to experience stress-inducing thoughts, keeping us trapped in a spiral of anxious thinking and chronic stress. We can escape this spiral by identifying our habitual stress-inducing thoughts and meeting them with thoughts that send a signal to our nervous systems that we are safe. These safeness-inducing thoughts are rooted in self-acceptance and self-compassion. For example, two of my habitual stress-inducing thoughts are \u201cI haven\u2019t got time\u201d and \u201cI\u2019ve got so much to do.\u201d Now, whenever I notice them pop into my mind, I meet them with compassion\u2014pausing, placing my hand on my heart, and silently saying, \u201cTake your time. There\u2019s no rush.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"body-h3 css-1q2spvl emevuu60\" data-node-id=\"9\">2. Take sensory breaks.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\">When we\u2019re in sensory-rich environments\u2014weddings, parties, offices with open floor plans\u2014it can be helpful to take a short sensory break every so often to protect ourselves from sensory overload. This might be as simple as going to the toilet for a couple of minutes or stepping outside where there aren\u2019t as many people. If you feel that sensory stimulation in your workplace is overwhelming, it might be helpful to speak with your manager about making sensory adjustments; these could range from getting some noise-canceling headphones to help you focus to having a more flexible schedule so that you can take regular sensory breaks.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"body-h3 css-1q2spvl emevuu60\" data-node-id=\"12\">3. Engage in deep acting.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\">Emotional labor is unavoidable for many of us. We frequently have to display certain emotions and hide others in order to provide a good service in our work and take care of our loved ones. There are two main ways we carry out emotional labor: surface acting (faking the expected emotional expressions) and deep acting (connecting with our values to cultivate genuine feelings that match the emotional expressions that are required). For example, if it\u2019s way past my son\u2019s bedtime and he isn\u2019t settling and I feel frustration arise, I connect with one of my core values: gentleness. When I do this, I sense my nervous system calm, notice my voice soften, and feel a deep sense of compassion awaken for how hard he must be finding it to fall asleep. While surface acting depletes our emotional resources, research has found that deep acting can be protective of our well-being. Next time you feel yourself performing emotional labor, see if you can connect with your values to awaken the feelings you want to express.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"body-h3 css-1q2spvl emevuu60\" data-node-id=\"15\">4. Establish a daily playtime.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\">When I was at school, playtime was an essential part of the day. We had three breaks each day of completely unstructured time when we were free to play games, have fun, and hang out with friends. At some point on the way to adulthood, playtime got squeezed out, but we can bring it back in simple and healing ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\">This will be different for each of us, depending on our schedules and responsibilities, but I like to spend five minutes at the end of my lunch break playing before I get back to work. Recently, I\u2019ve been enjoying juggling, but I\u2019ve also been through phases of playing with handstands, doodling, and reading a few pages of a fun fiction book. What is something fun you could do in your daily playtime?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"body-h3 css-1q2spvl emevuu60\" data-node-id=\"19\">5. Try \u201cbeauty hunting.&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\">When we\u2019re in a state of stress and our brains are wired toward threat detection, we have to consciously look for the beauty in our lives. This is what Jennifer Pastiloff, author of\u00a0<em data-node-id=\"21.1\">On Being Human<\/em>, calls \u201cbeauty hunting.\u201d Often when we begin this practice, we discover that beauty is all around us, hidden in the simple things we usually take for granted\u2014the delicate pattern in a leaf, the soft sound of birds in the distance, the reflection in a puddle, the elderly couple walking in front of us holding hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\">You might like to spend a minute beauty hunting now.
