You\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n<p>Most cultures have their own traditions and approaches to well-being.\u00a0 Some old practices such as\u00a0<a title=\"Yoga and Its Many Benefits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brownhealth.org\/be-well\/yoga-and-its-many-benefits\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"fa739331-919c-4e3e-8c53-e6a3c5feeab7\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">yoga<\/a>\u00a0or the Danish\u00a0<a title=\"Embrace Hygge and Learn to Love Winter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brownhealth.org\/be-well\/embrace-hygge-and-learn-love-winter\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"507b2dfe-4279-4a75-9edd-cffae1696db8\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">hygge<\/a>\u00a0have made their way to America and are enjoyed by many.<\/p>\n<p>In these days when \u201cI\u2019m so busy\u201d has become the mantra of the masses, it\u2019s time to embrace something that will give us what we seem to be craving \u2013 a balance in our lives. Something that encourages us to just do nothing may seem like a welcome port in a raging storm. That\u2019s where\u00a0<a title=\"What is niksen?\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5622094\/what-is-niksen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Niksen<\/a>\u00a0comes in.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Niksen?<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Niksen Like the Dutch | Dutch Review\" href=\"https:\/\/dutchreview.com\/expat\/lifestyle-expat\/dutch-niksen-accomplish-by-doing-nothing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dutch Review<\/a>\u00a0explains it as follows: \u201cNiksen means doing nothing or, more specifically, performing an action without a clear purpose or a deadline. For instance, for the Dutchies, looking out the window as people pass or going to the beach to stare at the waves for a while is considered niksen. And by doing so, they obtain a state of calmness, of tranquility that they really like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Niksen is a great form of\u00a0<a title=\"Practice Mindfulness: Don\u2019t Just Do Something, Stand There!\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brownhealth.org\/be-well\/practice-mindfulness-dont-just-do-something-stand-there\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"9b58f31b-f43a-4be8-82b4-e7c784ac6143\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">mindfulness<\/a>. With all the technology and\u00a0<a title=\"It\u2019s a Noisy World: 5 Ways to Protect Your Hearing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brownhealth.org\/be-well\/its-noisy-world-5-ways-protect-your-hearing\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"1e36c3cf-2ae4-4170-b098-02895e3b150e\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">noise<\/a>\u00a0that surround us, and the\u00a0<a title=\"Thoughts, Feelings and Stress\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brownhealth.org\/be-well\/thoughts-feelings-and-stress\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"22d5670d-4995-47b3-88b9-642aa7ccce45\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">stressors<\/a>\u00a0we find in\u00a0everyday life there are many reasons to approach life more mindfully. One of the benefits is better overall wellness and improved mood.<\/p>\n<h2>Doing nothing is a good thing<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps it is a sign of the times we live in, but for many,\u00a0 the thought of doing nothing just seems wrong. We could all list the things we think we need to do or should be doing. And of course we all have responsibilities in life.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to do something that we are trained to not do. We are taught to be motivated and goal-oriented, productive and successful. But no one ever said that we should be busy every waking minute.<\/p>\n<p>Niksen can be thought of as a way to clear your mind. Give yourself a reprieve and step away from everything, just for a few minutes. Don\u2019t think, just be.<\/p>\n<p>Some say that this simple act of clearing your mind to purposefully not think can also lead to creativity as well. In a\u00a0<a title=\"The Art and Science of Doing Nothing | Psychology Today\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/brain-wise\/201905\/the-art-and-science-doing-nothing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">column<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Psychology Today<\/em>, its author notes that she assigns five minutes of Niksen a day as a homework assignment in her mindfulness meditation class.\u00a0 What\u2019s interesting is that she finds that people are less apt to do five minutes of \u201cnothing\u201d than 20 minutes of something.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is,\u00a0<a title=\"Spring into Self-Care\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brownhealth.org\/be-well\/spring-self-care\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"865919ae-323f-41fe-b85d-7606b7b58c2a\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">self-care<\/a>\u00a0should be a priority. There is no harm in taking a step back and just letting your mind wander. Don\u2019t do it for any reason other than for the sake of just existing.<\/p>\n<p>Schedule some time to practice Niksen in your day. Once it\u2019s part of your schedule, it might feel more natural to you.
